Losing your identity.

Generally speaking, losing the identity could be a potential problem specially when everything (school counseling, psychological therapy, even self-help books) in contemporary culture and societay makes emphasis on achieving one identity. Be it hipster, jock, geek, nerd, gay, heterosexual, right-wing, left-wing, believer, atheist. The very thought of being outside of this cultural or arquetypical molds dizzes the consciousness.

That's why the idea of losing the identity seems daunting. The feart of suddenly leaving away the very idea of our being doesn't bring comfort. And that's the point.

Grabbing onto an idea or mold to be. That is the society non-written rule. You must be "something". And if you are no something, that instills confusion. There is a predetermined idea of what men, women, teenagers, children, elderly should be, how a people should behave, wear, and think on a determinate age and context.

Also, it is possible and plausible to cling to identities such as: depressive, bipolar, introvert, extrovert. This attributes (I may call them this way, as it will be explained ahead) as long as they are part of every human being, are not the essence or primordial identity. The lack of questioning leads every person to start assimilating those roles as essential to them. A depressive person then thinks of his/her issueas as an indistinguishable element of his being: melancholy, sadness, and so on. A male, as a provider of his home, a female, as a housewife.

Nevertheless, sadly (and of course, fortunately) human beings aren't something with a fixed and determinated essence or characters. Even beyond some basic biological aspects, there is diversity, in form, time and space. As we forgot to make questions, we, as individuals, and as a community, suppress this difference and truth: difference and diversity are part of our lives. It can be possible to aglutinate in a conceptual way, under certain perspective (biological, psychological, medical, physical, etc.) what a human being is. But these perspectives don't make justice to every person and their diversity.

Of course, the safe bet is to find something to identify ourselves, and live, try to exist under those parameters. And here is the moment to ask. why? Do we really have to live under certain rules beyond ethical frames? to circumscribe life to certain tacit rules?

In a search for happiness, there is no definite answer. Yet, the tendecy in this issue, seems to be "no". There can be a sense of safeness by abiding to this predeterminate structures. Certainly is safer, safer than questioning why I am doing what I am doing? Although, the reward comes in the form of autenticity. Not the one selled in commercials, internet, and malls. The intern coherence between the desire of being, and the growing confidence of being, not aspiring to be something finished, but with the consciousness and certainty that "being" is an ongoing process, that never ends.

Top 5 - U2

1. New Years Day, de su albúm War (1983).

3. With or without you, del álbum Joshua Tree (1987).

4. Beautiful Day, del albúm All that you can't leave behind. (2000).

5. Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me (1995).

disponiendo y gobernando;
y este aplauso, que recibe
prestado, en el viento escribe,
y en cenizas le convierte
la muerte, ¡desdicha fuerte!
¿Que hay quien intente reinar,
viendo que ha de despertar
en el sueño de la muerte?
Sueña el rico en su riqueza,
que más cuidados le ofrece;
sueña el pobre que padece
su miseria y su pobreza;
sueña el que a medrar empieza,
sueña el que afana y pretende,
sueña el que agravia y ofende,
y en el mundo, en conclusión,
todos sueñan lo que son,
aunque ninguno lo entiende.
Yo sueño que estoy aquí
destas prisiones cargado,
y soñé que en otro estado
más lisonjero me vi.
¿Qué es la vida? Un frenesí.
¿Qué es la vida? Una ilusión,
una sombra, una ficción,
y el mayor bien es pequeño:
que toda la vida es sueño,
y los sueños, sueños son.

La vida es sueño. Fin del primer acto.

Charles y Odette.

1. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn. Casi un "one-hit wonder" la canción más popular de la australiana de ojos verdes, extraída de su primer disco: Left of the middle.

2. The Wallflowers - One Headlight.

3. Garbage -  I think I'm paranoid.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer.

Spoiler Alert: Even if Neon Genesis Evangelion is a pretty popular and commented anime, with lots of fan pages dedicated to its analysis, I shall say: the topics that are about to be discussed here reveal the plot of the story.

So, the warning has been issued, so let's begin. NGE is a particular series. At first glance it is easy to think of it as a classic member of the mecha genre, very popular through the 70's and 80's. But the story is a lot more complicated than the usual plot "save the world from the evil enemies". In this case, there is much under the surface. The post-apocaliptyc scenario shows us, at first, the imminent threat of the angels: strange beings that seem to be driven by the desire to destroy humanity. In response, the UN and other organizations start a joint-venture to develop the EVAS: entities that appear as giant robots but are, in fact, biological creatures, with a genetic structure similar to the human. This entities are piloted by children of 14 years old.

The point of this "analysis" is the secret objective of one of the organizations that oversees the fight against the angels and the development of the Evangelions: SEELE and the Human Instrumentality Project. Without engaging in a deep study about this plan (which is not very clear at all and depends on which version of the anime or manga we talk about), the final goal is to reunite all human beings into an indeferentiated entity. As it is seen on "The End of Evangelion" instrumentality is portrayed as the dissolving of all human beings (and their individuality) into a liquid, pretty  much a resemblance of blood or the primordial fluid that scientists postulate to be the start of life in planet Earth.

What does this have to do with our two philosophers? Well, as the human instrumentality is believed on the NGE universe to be the ultimate solution to human evolution and the inherent conflict of humans (insociable sociability, as Kant said), Arthur Schopenhauer wrote about this in his greatest work The World as Will and Representation. There, Schopenhauer explains the world in two terms: representation is the world as human cognition perceives it; the classification, the order of natural laws, the differentiation between entities. On the other hand, will represent the world as it is really is, its essence as an indefferentiated primal force. The pain and sorrow in human life is the result of the process of scission of that primal force in individuals, that human beings nevertheless feel through their bodies, hoping in despair to sate.

Schopenhauer was far least radical in his attempt to restore the unity, pleading to aesthetic experience, compassion and reflection. But the similarities between his theory and the plot of NGE are to be noted. Even in NGE doesn't portrait the concept of Will, it does show the subyacent desire of unity and to stop disgregation, pleading for a better state of human race by erasing individual barriers; such argument is similar to the yearning that humans experience for such a state of unity, according to Schopenhauer.

Moreover, this idea is similar to the Primordial One that Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in The Birth of Tragedy, his first book. Ancient greeks knew, thanks to the theater, specifically, the tragedies, to commune with the primordial unity, represented by Dionysus, maimed before birth. dismembered by the Titans acording to Plato. The greek tragedy was not just a play, but a way to overcome the inherent despair of life, where every spectator was an active part of the representation, according to Nietzsche and his interpretations of the greek tragedies and mythologies. Again, the leitmotif is the yearning to unity.

In this way, NGE, wether on purpose or not, takes again an old human problem and transfigurates it into a contemporary view, where the human kind tries again to solve the issue of struggling between unity and individuality.

1. Rock you like a hurricane (Del albúm Love at first sting).

2. No one like you (De su albúm Blackout)

3. En colaboración con la ex-vocalista de Nightwish, Tarja Turunen, The Good die young.

4. Wind of Change, probablemente su tema más conocido.

5. Still loving you.
